Wise Words from Oinest Sartain

Normally when I am doing my devotions, I also journal what I’m reading/thinking. Today however I Just feel like sharing it with you, to me it was too good to just keep away in my journal. So, forgive me for “journaling” to you…
Our team has a devotional we put together with devotions from ourselves, family members and friends. It’s been great being able to do them on our own, but discuss them with other team members. Here is a summary of the last days that I really enjoyed and learned from.
Friday, Oct.7th. A devotional from Laura’s grandfather, Oinest, which is pronounced Honest.
He was spoke about his father who was born in 1877 before cars, radios, phones or electricity. He spoke about how godly his father was, and how he was a gentle man, slow to anger, always in prayer. One line I underlined that I really liked was when he father was talking to him and said “Oinest, even if there was not a heaven, the Christian life is sure worth living.” This is amazing to me. I wrote the other day about “enjoying the journey,” of life, not just the end product (heaven) and I believe this is so true. Sometimes I think we focus on living right so that heaven is our “prize.” What if there was no heaven? Would we still be trying to live Christ like lives? What if Jesus decided not to tell us about heaven and simply asked us to “follow him?” Would we still do it? I don’t know. To me this statement was so simple but so strong.
He went on to say that his father died at the age of 98, leaving a legacy of being a kind, godly man. He says this at the end, “what kind of legacy are you leaving? Are you living so that people will call you a man or woman after God’s heart? What do you say in times of utter desperation? Do you choose to bless the Name of the Lord? I tell Laura all the time, “All you’ll ever have is your name and your word.” Consider today if you are making good name for yourself and if people can trust you at your word, and always, bless the Name of the Lord.”
